Cuphea

Cuphea for fascinating flowers and rich colour

Cupheas are sometimes also called 'Cigar Plants' for their tubular flowers. These natives of the Americas come from warm temperate to tropical conditions in their native habitats. Cupheas can range from small shrubs to sub shrubs to small herbs. Cupheas have an interesting extra benefit in that some species can produce oils similar to Palm or Coconut oil and may have commercial value for agriculture. From an Aesthetic viewpoint Cupheas produce a profusion of fascinating flowers on a hardy plant preferring full sun and good drainage. These plants benefit from a trim to tidy them up once flowering has finished.
